GNWT’s Department of Justice are announcing drafted regulations to bring the Missing Persons Act into force. The drafted regulations propose requirements for officers during emergencies, provisions around officers’ access to records, transparency about personal information accessed and provisions for an annual report and review.
The justice department says the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls has driven the need for this legislation related to missing persons in Canada.
The justice department is looking for feedback on the proposed regulations which is available on the public engagement website until July 20
The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls highlighted the need for legislation related to missing persons in Canada. The GNWT is committed to responding to the Calls for Justice from the National Inquiry and has developed legislation to further support missing person investigations.
