NorthWords and Northern Quill holding first Flash Fiction contest

A local publishing company and a non-profit artist collective in Yellowknife are calling on writers and storytellers to share original works of fiction.

NorthWords NWT and Northern Quill Publishing are holding their first flash fiction contest, called Edges.

Organizers are looking for “powerful, original” stories told in 1,000 words or less. Amber Henry, Co-Owner Northern Quill Publishing, explains this year’s theme—Edges—can be interpreted broadly: “a physical boundary, an emotional breaking point, the edge of discovery, or the last moment before everything changes.”

“The theme came from a brainstorming session that started by listing interesting words. Edges stood out amongst the group and then the conversation shifted to what kind of pieces could be written using that word as a prompt. We felt like edges could be inspiring for a variety of writers. Horror, drama, romance, sci fi, memoir,” Henry told True North FM.

In terms of genre the contest will also accept submissions in the form of Graphic novel style but at this time is not accepting genres like screenplays as Northern Quill does not publish screenplays, said Henry.

The contest is accepting individual author submissions as well as co-written pieces.

Prizes will be awarded including $250 and publication in Up Here magazine.

“The winners will be announced with the arrival of the fall issue of Up Here Magazine,” said Henry.

Prizes will also be awarded for second and third place. Anyone who would like to submit a piece for consideration can  head to Northern Quill’s website.

“The 1st place winner will have their piece published in Up Here Magazine and on their website.

2nd and third place winners will be mentioned on our socials,” added Henry.
