Legislative Assembly Honours Volunteers with Territorial Awards

The GNWT has honoured a number of notable volunteers for the work they have across the North over the last year.

The NWT Outstanding Volunteer Awards were first started in 1991, and are given out every year to individuals and organizations who demonstrate an exceptional commitment of their skills and abilities to aid their communities.

The awards were presented during a special ceremony in the Great Hall of the Legislative Assembly, and were given out by Vince McKay, the Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs. The four recipients were Roger Pilling from Fort Simpson, Tafadzwa Mufandaedza from Yellowknife, Melissa Faith Johns from Fort Smith, and the Ulukhaktok Search and Rescue Team.

Roger Pilling was given the Outstanding Elder Award for his long history of leadership in local sports activities, as well as his career as a firefighter.

Tafadzwa Mufandaedza was given the Outstanding Youth Award for the dedication she has shown in volunteering with the Folk on the Rocks event and their ticketing booth, as well as serving as the Rovers Team Coordinator.

Melissa Faith Johns was given the Outstanding Individual Award for her lengthy work in supporting sports, cultural events, and many other fundraising events across her community.

Finally, the Ulukhaktok Search and Rescue Team were given the Outstanding Group Award for all of the work they do in responding to emergencies and providing mentorship to future search and rescue volunteers.

Minister McKay offered a statement on the nature of volunteer efforts in the North.

“Volunteerism strengthens our communities by bringing people together and creating lasting positive change. The dedication shown by this year’s award recipients demonstrates the values of compassion, leadership, and resilience that define the Northwest Territories. I extend my deepest gratitude to all volunteers across the NWT for their invaluable contributions, especially in ensuring safe communities for northerners.”

These four recipients were chosen from a total of 53 nominations sent in from 18 different communities throughout 2024.
