Nine people were arrested and an Edmonton man has received several firearms charges after an incident of forcible confinement in Hay River.
On February 18th, Hay River officers were informed that an individual was being held against their will at residence on Fir Crescent. Officers were able to quickly arrive on the scene and contain the situation with help from the Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Services, Remote Piloted Aircraft System Unit, Territorial Crime Reduction Unit and Critical Incident Command.
After negotiations concluded, nine people were taken into custody without incident, and the victim was retrieved unharmed. A search warrant was secured for the residence, which resulted in the seizure of a loaded handgun.
Eight of the arrested individuals have been released, and the remaining suspect, 22-year-old Ly Gabriel Galido of Edmonton, has received the following charges:
- Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
- Unsafe Storage of a Firearm
- Possession of a Firearm while know its Possession is Unauthorized
- Possession of a Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
- Unauthorized Possession of a Restricted Firearm
Galido has appeared before a Justice of the Peace and has been returned to custody.
This investigation is still ongoing, as the allegations of forcible confinement have yet to be fully confirmed. This incident is also believed to be connected to local drug trafficking.
