A man in Deline has been charged with bootlegging; the unlawful selling of alcohol.
The Deline RCMP conducted a Liquor Act Investigation on November 29th, after they were informed that someone in the community was selling alcohol illegally. The investigation discovered that the suspect was making use of commercial airlines to bring the alcohol into the community.
The man was officially charged on December 5th and compelled to appear in court. His next appearance will be on January 30th in Deline.
Bootlegging often sees an increase around the holidays, as there is a general increase in the consumption of alcohol and other substances. The Deline RCMP are reminding residents that they will continue to enforce the Liquor Act throughout the holidays as a measure to reduce the harm that bootlegging can cause.
The penalty for bootlegging is a fine of between $500 and $25,000, or a prison sentence of less than one year. Both of these penalties are for a first offence.
