Halloween Safety Advice

With the beloved holiday just a few days away, the Yellowknife Fire Department has shared a few safety tips for trick-or-treaters to keep in mind on Halloween.

Many costumes often come with some part that dangles or drags behind the wearer, such as capes, skirts, sleeves, costumes that are over-sized for comedic effect, and even fake beards. Costumes like these should be kept a safe distance away from any candles or other ignition sources. Anyone who will be out late at night should also try to have some kind of reflective element on their costume that can be seen by passing motorists.

To help avoid fire hazards in home decorations, one idea is to use small electronic candles inside jack-o-lanterns, and keep any real candles away from flammable materials. Decorative lights should be checked for any broken or cracked sockets, frayed or exposed wires. Electrical sockets should not be plugged in with more than they are designed to handle.

When out trick-or-treating, children should be under trusted supervision at all times. Once children are old enough to trick-or-treat on their own or with friends, advise them to carry flashlights with them, and stay in well-lit areas.
