Diavik Diamond Mine Incorporated has been sentenced under the Northwest Territories Mine Health and Safety Act following an incident that occurred last January.
Representatives of the mine appeared in the Northwest Territories’ Territorial Court in Yellowknife on September 11th and pled guilty to one count of “failing to implement and maintain work practices that are safe and that do not present undue risk to the health of worker.”
The charge is related to an incident that occurred at the mine on January 26th, 2023, when a worker suffered what the Workers Safety and Compensation Commission calls a “severe hand injury” while cleaning a Rockfill Mixer machine with a hose which was dropped into the machine, pulling the workers hand along with it.
According to the WSCC’s investigation, there were no guards or safety measures implemented on the Rockfill Mixer to avoid workers coming in contact with the machine’s moving parts.
As a result, Diavik Diamond Mine Incorporated has been issued a fine of $125K to be paid to the Workers’ Protection Fund along with a 15 per cent victim fine surcharge.
