Hay River Advises Residents on Health Issues from Smoke

Over the past few weeks, Hay River has been dealing with continuous smoke coverage, prompting the community to share some information on how residents can minimize the negative health effects.

First, not everyone who is exposed to wildfire smoke is under the same amount of risk. Individuals with preexisting respiratory issues, infants and young children, elderly people, and pregnant women  are at a far greater chance of experiencing health issues from wildfire smoke.

Some of the symptoms from smoke exposure include sore eyes, teary eyes, runny nose, and a persistent cough.

Some of the ways to help avoid exposure to smoke include:

  • Stay indoors as much as possible
  • Make use of air filters
  • Refrain from smoking cigarettes
  • Keep windows closed when driving
  • Drink lots of water
  • Avoid exerting yourself when outdoors
  • Use fans to move air around the house
