The Town of Hay River has shared a handful of firesmart tips to help homeowners lower the risk of fires in the area.
The firesmart aspect being focused on by the Town is the Home Ignition Zone, which is the immediate 30 metres surrounding a structure. This are is made up of three egments, the Immediate Zone, the Intermediate Zone, and the Extended Zone.
The Immediate Zone is set between 0 and 1.5 metres around the home. This area includes attached structures like decks and patios. The best ways to reduce the chances of wind-blown embers igniting the home is to check if the materials used to build the home are easily flammable. Homeowners can also make sure to clear vegetation and other combustible materials in the immediate vicinity.
The Intermediate Zone is located 1.5 to 10 metres away from the structure. The key to this zone is to manage the materials located within to make sure that any fire does not progress closer to the structure. Try to plant fire-resistant vegetation and use non-combustible landscaping materials. Items such as firewood piles, outdoor furniture, tools, and decorative pieces should be kept out of this area. Recreational vehicles, trailers, and storage sheds should be kept within the Intermediate Zone as much as possible.
Finally, the Extended Zone covers the area 10 to 30 metres away from the structure. The goal of this zone is to reduce the intensity of the fire. Make sure to try and clear away all fallen branches and dry grass to reduce fuel for the fire.
