YK1 Schools giving out Awards for Indigenous Students

Schools under the YK1 District will soon be holding their year-end award ceremonies.

These ceremonies will be handing out the Sacred Feather Indigenous Student Award at each school. This award is an initiative of the Yellowknife Education District No. 1 Board of Trustees, and looks to recognize Indigenous students who display strength and commitment to their culture on their personal education paths.

These awards are presents annually to Indigenous students who are selected by a Board of Trustees awards committee. There are several different factors that the Board takes into account when looking at nominees:

  • Embracing their cultural identity and promoting the strength, beauty and value of their culture and community
  • Modeling cultural leadership to inspire their peers to pursue their own dreams and goals
  • Demonstrating honesty and honour in daily encounters with school community members
  • Personifies the values (or spirit) of the Dene Laws
  • Demonstrating empathy by understanding and respecting other points of view
  • Understanding and sharing the Indigenous history and culture of Yellowknife
  • Demonstrating a commitment to taking care of the land
  • Demonstrating that diversity is a strength and should be understood, respected, celebrated and affirmed, and
  • Demonstrating that citizenship is lived, relational and experiential.

The awards are given out in four different age categories, from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 2, Grade 3 to 5, Grade 6 to 8, and Grade 9 to 12.

For the four schools in the District, their award ceremonies will each be held on June 20th.
