An Evacuation Order has been issued for the community of Fort Good Hope.

A fire was located 3.8km to the Northeast of the community, and was determined to be human-caused. The initial attack against the fire began early in the morning on Saturday, June 15th, as soon as possible after the fire was discovered. It has since grown from 2 to 5 hectares.

There is currently a risk that if the wind shifts to the northeast overnight, that the fire could reach Fort Good Hope within the next 24 hours. Crews are working to prevent this outcome at all costs, and are trying to limit the growth of the fire to help protect residents. Firefighting efforts may be made more difficult due to wind and dry conditions in the area.

Airtankers and helicopters have been working to aid ground teams and slow the fire’s growth, and additional crews are on their way. Structure protection efforts will be established as soon as possible.

Residents of Fort Good Hope are advised to pack light, and make sure they have their important paperwork and ID. A muster point has been set up at the band hall, and Norman Wells is working on accepting evacuees, with evacuation centres at the community hall and school gym.
