Early in the morning on Monday, May 20th, a 3.7 magnitude earthquake was detected around 64 kilometres away from Aklavik.
The quake was detected around 9:30am. No damage has been reported so far, and only very weak shaking was felt by a handful of people close to the epicentre. The only nearby communities that would have felt very light shaking at most are Aklavik, Fort McPherson, and Inuvik. The quake was measured to have a depth of 15.6km.
While earthquakes are not uncommon for the area, this one had the highest magnitude rating since February. Most quakes in the NWT occur closer to the Yukon, and in the viscinity of a mine. It is also rare for Northern earthquakes to reach or surpass a magnitude of 4.0.
