Northland Utilities not charging for power during outages

Northland Utilities has issued an announcement regarding the status of power in the NWT during the territory-wide state of emergency.

After several communities across the NWT experienced power outages, numerous residents have raised questions regarding their power bills during the evacuations.

The power company says no charges will apply during the time power is shut off, as rates are based on usage and consumption.

Upon reentry, customers who have contacted Northland Utilities to end electricity service during the evacuation will need to call to reactivate their account. Customers who have not contacted the company will not be subject to further action and should have power as soon as it is restored.

The company adds that customers will only be charged based on consumption (e.g., if you left appliances plugged in) so power bills will likely be low for most Yellowknife customers.

Northland says they are continuing to work closely with NTPC, the GNWT, and the City of Yellowknife and will continue providing service as long as it is safe.
