Sprinklers set up in Fort Smith, dozer lines established in Hay River

Rain and favourable conditions have given some breathing room to NWT Fire crews in the South Slave.

According to NWT Fire, flames did not reach Fort Smith or Hay River due to rainfall and fire is not expected to reach either community today.

Air crews say they have been hampered by poor visibility today; however, when conditions allow, aircraft is scheduled to be deployed to assess the situation in both communities.

In Fort Smith, NWT Fire crews have continued to work with Alberta and Parks Canada to complete sprinkler setup around the town. NWT Fire says crews continued to establish dozer lines at numerous parts of the fire and preparing for ignition operations to protect infrastructure.

In Hay River, crews say they have continued their work on protections on the ground in cooperation with the Town and NWT Fire says dozer work is being done in the area to create breaks.
