Assault with Weapon and Impaired Driving in Weekend RCMP Report

The NT RCMP have released a series of reports for their calls to service over the July 14th weekend.

On July 14th, 2023 at approximately 6:45 p.m. the Behchoko RCMP responded to a complaint of assault with a weapon. Officers learned that a man had been assaulted by female who had truck him repeatedly with a baseball bat before he was able to flee. The man was treated for injuries at the medical clinic in Behchoko. The woman was arrested, without incident, and released on conditions for court at a later date.

On July 14th just before 11 p.m. the Fort Providence RCMP conducted a traffic stop and determined that the female driver of the vehicle was showing indicia of impairment by alcohol. The officer demanded that woman provide a sample of her breath into a roadside screening device. The woman refused and was arrested for refusal to provide a breath sample before being transported to her residence and released for court.

Refusing to provide a breath sample after a lawful demand has been made, carries the same punishment as impaired driving. Cpl. Kevin Devoe, the detachment commander for the Fort Liard RCMP, has noticed an upward trend of impaired driving complaints and charges in Fort Liard. “I am very thankful that this person was located by police before anyone sustained serious bodily harm or died as a result of the poor decision to drive while under the influence of alcohol,” states Cpl. Keven Devoe. Residents of Fort Liard can expect additional patrols to address impaired driving in the community.

Anyone who has information about an of these incidents is asked to contact their local RCMP Detachment.
