Yesterday, MP Michael McLeod joined Yellowknife Mayor Rebecca Alty at the Yellowknife Fieldhouse to announce the Government of Canada’s $472,000 investment in an accessibility project by the City of Yellowknife.
The investment aims to reduce barriers at both the Yellowknife Fieldhouse and Multiplex, to address accessibility concerns for impaired visitors and residents.
“This is an investment that helps people that have challenges accessing buildings so a barrier-free investment is something I’m very pleased to do,” McLeod tells MyTrueNorthNow.
Accessibility has been a major priority for the current city council and Mayor Alty says investments like these are an integral part of accomplishing the council’s goals.
“We started the work back in 2019, and we’ve been working our way through it,” Alty tells MyTrueNorthNow. “We’re going through all our facilities as well as our trails to make them more accessible,” she adds.
Parks like the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Playground have recently started popping up and Mayor Alty tells MyTrueNorthNow Yellowknifers can expect further projects like that in the future.
“I would say the crown jewel for accessibility is the Canadian Tire Jumpstart, but we are looking to see what other components we can add to playgrounds to make them more accessible,” Alty says.
