An old fire came back to life last night due to rising temperatures throughout the territory.
Fires in the Dehcho, Beaufort Delta, and Wekweètì have burst, adding five new fires to the territory’s 27 active wildfires.
NWT Fire says the most concerning of the latest fires are the three clustered around the community of Wekweètì.
According to NWT Fire, the flames have completely surrounded the community in three key areas: across Snare Lake, the western tip of the lake, and an island within 2km of the community.
Crews say the fire is around 50 hectares in size but the situation is changing quickly, and the flames are too intense to fight from the ground so it is being attacked by air.
