NWT ECC says a return home for Hay River/KFN evacuees could be expected after a minimum of 5-6 days

According to the Town of Hay River, the northwest section of the fire by the Old Village in KFN has been stabilized. Five crews are working to put in a cat guard intended to expand all the way to Highway 5 when complete.

ECC says they are concerned with the risk of the fire breaching the northeast corner and returning around the south of the fire with limited protection for Hay River. According to the Town of Hay River, test burns around the northeast corner produced unfavorable results due to dry conditions.

Unpredictable winds continue to be a major cause for concern with gusts expected to reach 15 to 25 km/h from the north which will put pressure on the hot southern edge of the fire.

NWT ECC says they are anticipating a potential return for Hay River/KFN fire evacuees after a minimum of 5-6 days.
