G.N.W.T seeking information from the public about black bear shooting

Yellowknife, NWT – The G.N.W.T’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources is seeking information from the public about the unreported shooting of a black bear in Reid Lake Territorial Park over the weekend.

Officials say the animal was shot early Sunday morning.

Communications Manager Judy Mclinton with E.N.R says this was a clear violation of department regulations.

“If it is for self-defence or to protect property, you can shoot a bear but you have to report it as soon as you can to the closest Renewable Resource Officer and that was not done which is against regulations.”

Mclinton says in most cases an officer will come to the site and take possession of the animal.

She says anyone caught violating these regulations is subject to a maximum fine of $1,000 or up to one year in prison.

Anyone with information on this shooting is asked to contact the North Slave Regional Office or the Report a Poacher toll-free line.
