MLA concerned over G.N.W.T’s use of available resources to tackle forest fires

Yellowknife, NWT – Range Lake MLA Daryl Dolynny says G.N.W.T departments battling forest fires aren’t being as transparent as they should be at times.

Dolynny credits the work of all the fire crews across the territory and some of the communication being provided by the G.N.W.T, but says there’s always room for improvement.

Dolynny says he is particularly concerned about the number of available resources being utilized.

“Are we making the right calls? Do we have enough air attack officers? Without enough air attack officers, we can’t maximize our air fleet to help our ground support. These are fundamental questions and I think people assume that we’ve got all our planes in the air and I can assure you that some planes have not seen very many days in the air.”

In one of the territory’s worst fire season in three decades, Dolynny says the G.N.W.T owes it to its residents to provide them with the best possible communication.

He says communication has been sparse at times, leaving northerners wondering about road closures and other disrupted services.
