NWT Fire reports eight new lightning-caused fires in the NWT

NWT Fire reports eight new lightning-caused fires in the NWT since yesterday. In some regions, rain has brought relief to wildfire response efforts.

While some wildfires have been nearly extinguished, crews are actively mobilizing a response to prevent the spread of other fires. Officials said there are no threats to communities at this time, but some wildfires pose a potential risk to values and are being closely monitored and acted on.

BEAUFORT DELTA REGION

In the Beaufort Delta region, weather conditions have brought some relief to wildfires and Fire crews.

However, a wildfire located about 33 km east of Inuvik  (EV016-25) is now estimated at just over 50 hectares in size and officials said containing it remains a “high priority.”

“Containing this fire remains a high priority. Quick work is being made in the wake of rain to contain the south and west flanks of the fire to prevent growth towards Inuvik,” said NWT Fire.

The wildfire located about 37 km east of Inuvik (EV017-25 ) has shown low activity in the past 24 hours, said officials. Efforts to contain it continue.

“Rain in the area has brought fire danger down and given crews and aircraft a good chance to get good work done,” said officials.

Wildfires (EV006, EV007, EV013, EV014 and EV018) are at under control status thanks to quick, strategically coordinated air attack and action of Fire crews on the ground.

Fire crews have mobilized an “aggressive attack” on the wildfire located about 5 km west-northwest of Fort McPherson (EV022-25), which began as soon as the fire was spotted on June 30. Crews have brought it to a “near stop.”

“Local ground crews following up on initial attack today and are making excellent progress,” said NWT Fire.

Another lightning-caused wildfire (EV021-25) located about 15 km southwest of Fort McPherson is approximately one hectare in size and is currently classified as out of control.

“It received an aggressive and successful air attack on June 30 and crews are following up today to contain it. No threats to communities, cabins, or infrastructure in the region,” said Fire crews.

DEHCHO REGION

In the Liard Complex (FS002, FS006, FS009), crews are mobilizing on the north and west flanks of fire FS009 to stop further spread towards the community of Fort Liard.

“Air support continues to allow this work to get done. Sprinkler protection continues across all fires in the complex. FS002 is nearly extinguished. No immediate threats to communities or infrastructure,” said officials.

Another wildfire (FS014) is located about 23 km southeast of Fort Simpson, and 24 km northwest of Jean-Marie River in the Dehcho region.

“The Incident Management Team and wildfire crews assigned to this fire continue to take advantage of the opening offered by the rain event yesterday. Crews have established helipads for access and are working around the fire’s edge to expose hotspots, get water on them, and contain the perimeter. Air support continues work to keep intensity low so ground forces can make good progress,” said NWT Fire.

NORTH SLAVE REGION

Fire crews are currently monitoring and actioning a number of wildfires in the North Slave region, including one fire southwest of Edzo. This lightning caused fire (ZF023-25) has been aggressively actioned by air attack since ot was spotted today. Fire crews are working to contain its perimeter.

“The objective is to prevent growth towards Edzo, protect highway access, and prevent encroachment on remote values. There are no immediate threats to communities, cabins, or infrastructure,” said NWT Fire.

A string of wildfires ( ZF015, ZF016, ZF017) are visible along Highway 3 and the Tłı̨chǫ All-Season Road.

“They may cause visibility issues in the area. ZF015 and ZF016 may impact Highway 3 today,” cautioned officials.
