N.W.T. fire crews are taking preventative measures to stop the spread of a Dehcho region fire south of the territorial border to “cut off its potential for growth.”
“Fire season gets rolling early again in the Dehcho region – and wildfire crews were ready to go,” said Mike Westwick, Wildfire Information Officer at GNWT’s Environment and Natural Resources in an update issued this afternoon
Currently crews are dealing with a fire south of the N.W.T. border near B.C.
“A fire crew and helicopter are acting a half hectare overwinter fire just south of the BC/NWT Border near the Petitot River within British Columbia,” said Westwick.
The fire is being acted on to cut off its potential spread.
“While this fire is not in the NWT, we identified it for action to cut off its potential for growth towards values in the NWT,” said Westwick.
Westwick said that this kind of cross-border work is made possible by agreements between provincial and territorial partners. Territorial partners like the BC Wildfire Service allow other provinces and territories to respond swiftly within certain areas of other jurisdictions.
These kinds of partnerships prevent threats within each partner’s nearby boundaries.
Westwick assured that Wildfire updates will be issued as-needed until fire activity picks up. When it does, daily updates will resume, he said.
