Deputy Mayor Hendriksen will soon have a new title after being appointed Mayor of the City of Yellowknife following a special meeting of council on Monday
The meeting was called after Yellowknife Mayor Rebecca Alty submitted her resignation from the municipality after winning the race to become a member of Parliament in the NWT riding.
Council had three options to choose from, which included elevating a councillor into the mayoral seat and running a byelection, or having a byelection for the vacant mayor’s chair. The third, and ultimately selected option, was to elevate a member of council and leave a seat vacant until the next municipal election.
Hendriksen will be sworn in ahead of the the next regular Council meeting on May 12th.
