Yellowknife firefighters battle blaze at apartment complex

Firefighters and RCMP responded to a fire that broke out at an apartment building in the city of Yellowknife yesterday afternoon.

On March 27 at approximately 2:31 p.m. Yellowknife RCMP received report of a structure fire at the Sunridge Apartments on 5603 51a Avenue.

RCMP officers were at the scene and provided traffic control as the Yellowknife Fire Department battled the fire.

“Upon arrival, firefighters observed smoke coming from a first-floor apartment of the three-story complex,” said the city of Yellowknife in a statement released on March 28.

“(Firefighters) quickly gained entry, extinguished the fire, and remained on scene for approximately three hours to ensure safety and security in the area,” they said.

The RCMP and the city report that no one was injured.

“Victim Services was on scene and provided assistance to affected residents,” the RCMP confirmed.

The RCMP said there was no indication of criminal activity based on the initial information available to police.

The fire remains under investigation at this time.

“(T)he Office of the Fire Marshall has been contacted and is the agency responsible for investigating the cause of fires,” the RCMP said. They ask anyone with information to contact the Yellowknife RCMP at 867-669-1111 or Crime Stoppers at http://www.p3tips.com.

Tenants of the apartment complex were evacuated. The Northview company, who own the building, and the Yellowknife Housing Authority are coordinating efforts to find new housing for displaced tenants.

“Given the status of the building, it is not habitable for any occupants,” said the city.
