Celebrated community leader and former N.W.T. Premier Joe Handley leaves big shoes to fill as he steps away from his chairperson role at Aurora College.
In response, Minister of Education Caitlin Cleveland issued an announcement on March 19. In it she praised Handley for his service and leadership during an “important time” for the college which has seen major changes in recent years.
“His leadership helped strengthen governance and guide the institution as it moves toward becoming a polytechnic university,” Cleveland said.
Cleveland added the college is expected to undergo more changes as outlined in the institution’s latest mandate.
“The Aurora College Mandate Agreement 2025-2028 provides a clear roadmap for the next phase of transformation, focusing on governance improvements, infrastructure development, and academic and research excellence,” she said.
As the very first Chair of the Board of Governors, Handley is credited as being pivotal to bringing the Board together and “laying the foundation” for the college’s governance, said GNWT Media rep Chantelle Masson.
“His years in public service have also left a lasting impact on the NWT, from his time as a former Premier and GNWT Deputy Minister to his many years as a trained educator,” Masson added.
Handley took on the role of chairperson in 2023, following decades of service as an educator and leader. Before being elected N.W.T Premier between 2003 and 2007 (following roles as deputy minister, member of the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly and former minister of a wide variety of GNWT Departments), he worked as a professional educator in elementary and post-secondary school settings.
The Governor’s Board is among three bodies making up the college’s tri-cameral governance system, together with the Indigenous Knowledge Holders Council and the Academic Council.
Handley provided “invaluable leadership” and direction while he led the Board of Governors, helping to strengthen governance and guide the college, said Stephanie Tobin, who is the Communications Officer with Aurora College.
With Handley leaving, the board will elect a new chairperson and fill the seat left vacant by Handley’s departure.
“The GNWT remains committed to ensuring strong leadership and positioning the college for long-term success in this next phase,” said Cleveland.
The college board is expected to issue a public announcement inviting those interested in continuing Handley’s leadership legacy to submit an expression of interest.
“The process inviting statements of interest will begin shortly. We expect it to be issued before the end of the month,” said Tobin.
Once a new member is selected, the board is expected to elect a new chairperson.
