NWT Youth Program Receiving National Investment

An NWT based youth organization will be receiving a major investment to help foster the next generation of leaders.

The announcement was made by the Office of Michael McLeod, the Member of Parliament for the Northwest Territories. He shared that the Canada Service Corps will be investing $200 million to youth volunteer projects across the country. In working with the Northwest Territories Recreation and Parks Association, $821,433 will be given to the Northern Recreation Leader Corps.

This project is designed to train young leaders from many different communities across the NWT. Those leaders will then help to create new and engaging recreation opportunities for the other children and youth in their home communities.

MP McLeod explained in a statement that he believes that youth in the NWT “deserve opportunities to develop their skills and gain new experiences. Through the Canada Service Corps, our government enabling more young Northerners to grow and contribute to their communities.”

The Northern Recreation Leader Corps is expected to serve up to 120 Indigenous youth participants across the Territory. It is also anticipated that this program will help provide more opportunities for under-served youth through these recreational and volunteer programs.

The Honourable Marci Ien, the Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, shared her excitement for the investment.

“By teaming up with amazing organizations across the country, we’re creating more opportunities for young people to grow their skills, follow their passions, and make a real impact in their communities—all while setting themselves up for future career success. I’ve seen firsthand the incredible things youth can accomplish through this program, and I can’t wait to see what they do next.”
