NWT students being given the chance to take part in the annual Meaning of Home writing contest from Habitat for Humanity.
This contest is running until February 21st, and encourages local students in grades 4, 5, and 6 to submit an essay that responds to the question “what does home mean to you?”. Every entry sent in helps to generate a $10 donation to Habitat in the student’s name. That money is then used to help develop new affordable homes across the NWT.
At the end of the contest, three grand prize winners will be chosen from across the country to receive a $30,000 grant to help their local Habitat branch build homes within their own communities.
Alayna Ward, the Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity Northwest Territories, said in a statement that last year saw a “record number of entries from the Northwest Territories, and we’re excited for more students to get involved and share their thoughts on what home means to them and potentially having a winner from the territory! Each entry not only raises critical funds for affordable housing, but also deepens community understanding of how a safe, stable home can change lives.”
Last year’s contest saw more than one hundred submissions from the NWT, and approximately 17,000 submissions from across the country. Since its founding in 2007, the contest has been able to raise more than $2.7 million, and has encouraged thousands of students to become more active in their communities.
