The GNWT will soon be introducing the Indigenous Employment Policy as a way to help improve equity and inclusion in public service.
The new Policy will be introduced on April 1st, while the previous Affirmative Action Policy will be rescinded on March 31st. The aim behind the IEP is to empower Indigenous employees to help build more long-term careers within the Territory. The GNWT is hoping to have their public service reflect the population. Currently, 49 percent of the NWT’s population is considered Indigenous, while the GNWT’s workforce only has 29 percent of Indigenous employees.
The policy was developed through various public engagement sessions and consultations with Indigenous governments and organizations.
Caroline Wawzonek, the Minister of Finance, said in a statement that the Policy “is an important step in advancing reconciliation and ensuring the GNWT reflects the communities it serves. By focusing on removing barriers and providing supports like mentorship programs and leadership training, we are working to create meaningful opportunities for Indigenous employees to grow and succeed. This policy represents our commitment to real change and to building a stronger, more inclusive government for all Northerners.”
The Policy will be emphasizing transparency and accountability, and will require annual reports on workplace demographics in government businesses. More information on the Policy will be shared with the public at a Town Hall on January 28th.
