Over $76,000 Seized from Man Arrested in Behchoko

After a lengthy processing period, an Alberta man has received a Possession charge after he was pulled over in a traffic stop.

On November 25th, RCMP officers in Behchoko noticed that a vehicle with an Alberta licence plate was exhibiting suspicious driving behaviour. The driver was arrested, and officers took a closer look at the vehicle.

During their search, a hidden compartment was found inside the vehicle, which contained a large amount of cash. The vehicle was seized for further processing, and a warrant was acquired to properly search the vehicle with the help of Police Dog Services.

Having finally processed all of the cash, the total amount was determined to have been in excess of $76,000. This money is believed to be the proceeds of crime, as other items found in the vehicle included several cell phones, and a small amount of illicit prescription drugs.

The driver, 31-year-old Taimur Ahmed from Edmonton, has been charged with Possession of Property Obtained by Crime over $5,000.

After an appearance in court, Ahmed was released from custody under the conditions that he must leave the NWT within 72 hours, report to a bail supervisor, cannot possess more than one cell phone, and may not possess any firearms.

The investigation into this matter remains open.
