With November 22nd being National Housing Day, the GNWT has shared some of the progress that has recently been made on addressing the needs of Northern residents.
The update was shared by Lucy Kuptana, who serves as the Minister for Housing NWT. She states that housing remains a top priority for the territorial government, and that they remain committed to making sure that all Northerners have access to affordable and accessible housing.
In the last year, upwards of $100 million have gone to a number of different housing projects, such as a 36-unit apartment complex and a 50-unit multi-plex in Yellowknife, as well as five new seniors’ duplexes in various communities to allow elders to live closer to their families.
Minister Kuptana also shared that the GNWT has made progress with their Indigenous partnerships. She cites an agreement made in April with the Gwich’in Tribal Council which was added to another five agreements with other Indigenous Government leaders to help provide housing solutions to struggling communities.
“To those struggling with housing challenges: we hear you, and we’re working hard to create more housing options and build more homes for Northerners. To our partners: Indigenous governments, community leaders, federal colleagues, and housing advocates; quyanainni ilaugavit –thank you for your partnership.“
