New Training Program Introduced for Northern Filmmakers

Northern filmmakers are being given a new tool to help them advance in their careers.

Recently announced by both the Northwest Territories Producers Association and the Northwest Territories Film Commission, the Northern Canada Producer Launcher is a new program that is aiming to give those working in the screen industry the training and boosts they need to become professionals, launching a new wave of content industry professionals in the North.

This program follows on from 2022’s Northern Canadian Producer Accelerator and provides a number of different teaching tools and financial assistance to help participants become well equipped to become producers and face the unique challenges of a Northern film industry. Participants will be offered digital and in-person classes, coverage for travel expenses, and flexible schedules to help get their work done.

Jen Walden, a member of the NTPA, said that the new program will “launch a new chapter for the creative content and capabilities coming out of the North. Our goal is to help grow the film and media sector of the NWT. We’re excited to support content creators in the Territory with producing authentic Northern stories.”

This program will accept up to ten participants, and will even take in people who have no prior experience in the film and tv industry. They will be taught how to develop their ideas professionally so that they can eventually be presented, sold, and produced. The first batch of students will be selected through an application process, which is open to all residents of the NWT, Nunavut, and Yukon.

Applications can be found by clicking here.
