City of Yellowknife wants fair representation for citizens in Legislative Assembly

Yellowknife, NWT – Yellowknifers might not be fairly represented in territorial politics.

That’s according to Yellowknife Mayor Mark Heyck.

He says council passed a motion on Tuesday requesting that the city write to Justice Minister David Ramsay to ask that he refer questions to the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories regarding electoral boundaries and discrepancies in voter populations.

Heyck explains why council has decided to go through with this.

“The city of Yellowknife made an official submission arguing that Yellowknife as a community is severely under-represented in the Legislative Assembly. We pointed out that in virtually all the ridings in Yellowknife, there’s many more people than the average right across the territory.”

Heyck says numbers used by the Electoral Boundaries Commission are from 2012.

At that time he says Yellowknifers accounted for 47 per cent of the territory’s total population, but had only 36 per cent representation in the Legislature.
