The De Beers group has announced that from now on, they will be providing country of origin information on all of their diamonds above 1.25 carats.
This will be in line with the new “Tracr” program, which is a digital platform that traces natural diamonds from their source. This measuring system will be fully rolled out at the start of 2025, and will be extended to rough diamonds above one carat in size.
The thinking behind this change is that jewellery consumers will be able to learn and engage with the journeys of the stones all the way to their source. De Beers is also aiming to line up with their stated values of transparency, ethical sourcing, and consumer confidence.
Al Cook, the CEO of De Beers Group, said that “For the first time in history, we have the technology to provide our customers with the provenance of their diamonds at scale. We know that our clients care deeply about sustainability and want to understand the good their diamonds have done. Our ambition is to offer them the story of every De Beers-sourced diamond, tracing its journey and positive impact from its origin to its crafting.”
The announcement was made at a “Spotlight on Diamonds” event in Paris.
