Communication Disruptions Expected in South Slave Region Due to Maintenance

The GNWT is advising the public that NorthwesTel will be performing important maintenance that will have an impact on communication services in several communities.

The work is set to take place between 12am and 6am from October 22nd to the 25th, and is expected to cause disruptions to voice, internet, and cellular services, including 9-1-1, in the communities of Kakisa, Fort Resolution, Fort Smith, and Hay River.

NorthwesTel workers will be conducting maintenance in the South Slave region in order to remove temporary fibre optic cables that were installed in response to wildfires, and they will be replaced with more permanent infrastructure.

It is expected that this work will disrupt communication services for up to two hours each night while the work is being done.

Residents in the affected areas are encouraged to prepare themselves for the outages. If your phone remains operational, you should still be able to reach 9-1-1. If it is not, you can contact the local RCMP detachment directly or go to the nearest RCMP station. For health emergencies, if you are unable to reach local health clinics or hospitals by phone, please proceed directly to the nearest health facility. For non-emergencies, you can call
8-1-1 to speak with a registered nurse.
