Over the Thanksgiving Long weekend, RCMP Detachments across the Territory will be taking part in a nation-wide traffic safety initiative.
This project is known as Operation: Impact, and is designed to reduce behaviors that put drivers and pedestrians in danger. This operation will be running from October 11th to the 14th. During this time, the public can be expected to see an increased police presence, with additional checkstops on roadways across the NWT.
Anyone who is stopped by the police this weekend can expect to provide breath samples as part of a mandatory alcohol screening.
The RCMP remind residents that the main causes of motor vehicle incidents are impairment, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and a failure to use seatbelts, all of which are easily preventable.
Anyone who suspects that they have encountered an impaired or dangerous driver is asked to immediately contact 911.
