The YKCares Food Drive at Co-op managed to raise more than $20,000 during its 2024 event earlier this month.
The total numbers came in a few days after the drive and officials say 458 kits were sold at Co-op’s tills, with $10,000 donated by Khione Resources, and $10,000 from Co-op itself.
Justin Nelson, Yellowknife Co-op General Manager says his store is always happy to support YKCares, as the work being done directly affects young people across the city.
“We know the value of being in the community, we love our members, the citizens of Yellowknife, we’re here for our citizens and our members, that’s what a local grocery store should be doing, we like to support the people that support us,” he says. “It feels good that we can support YKCares, bringing food to kids that otherwise have food insecurity issues [because] nobody should have to worry about what they’re going to eat.”
Anyone interested in supporting the program but missed the food drive can still help out by donating at the till any time throughout the year. YKCares maintains that 100 per cent of donations will go towards food kits.
