A fire ban has been issued for the City of Yellowknife thanks to extended dry, hot conditions, and will go into effect as of 12 p.m. on Friday.
Fire ban prohibits open air burning and discharging of fireworks within city limits, including the use of approved fire pits, and will remain in effect until further notice.
However, using things like camp-stoves, enclosed BBQs, and approved propane-fueled appliances are permitted. Outdoor propane-fueled burners are also permitted for heating and/or cooking, but must be used within the confines of a fire pit.
Yellowknife Fire Chief Nelson Johnson says the fire ban is going to be in place as a proactive measure. Johnson adds, however, that fire safety is something we all have to take up the responsibility on.
“To reduce the risk of fires starting from campfires, bonfires or other open sourced flames within city limits,” Johnson Says. “We all have a role to play in preventing wildfires, and keeping our community safe,” he adds.
