Economic Development and Environment seeking public input as part of regulatory framework review

The Standing Committee on Economic Development and Environment (SCEDE) is conducting a review to understand how participants experience the regulatory process for land and water use permits as stipulated by the Mackenzie Valley Resources Management Act (MVRMA). The goal is to identify areas for improvement, ensuring a more efficient and effective process for all.

The Act and its regulatory framework establish the criteria and procedures for obtaining land or water use permits in the Mackenzie Valley, focusing on environmental protection. The committee intends to examine the Government of the Northwest Territories’ (GNWT) role and oversight areas more closely to verify the effectiveness and proper functioning of the framework and processes.

The review will build upon the existing body of research and previous efforts in this domain, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the issues. Additionally, the committee will explore ways the GNWT can enhance support for all participants in the land and water use regulatory process.

The committee is seeking feedback from the public and stakeholders during the review. The goal is to compile a report containing observations and recommendations for the GNWT to implement improvements within the aspects of the system it governs.

The deadline for input is July 31, 2024.
