The recipients of this year’s Healthy Choices Fund have been announced.
Fifteen different organizations will now receive funding to help them carry out their various projects and endeavours that support their communities and encourage positive lifestyle choices.
Some of the recipients include:
- The Tlicho Friendship Centre’s “Emerging Youth Engagement for Change” program. This program teaches youth different radio and social media skills to help spread messages about nutrition and healthy lifestyles.
- The NWT Recreation and Parks Association’s “Decreasing Barriers to Active Mobility,” which is aiming to allow Yellowknife residents to rent bikes for free to help encourage daily physical activity.
- The Liidlii Kue First Nation’s “Elders Cooking Classes,” which help teaches nutrition and healthy meal preparation to local elders.
In a statement, Lesa Semmler, the Minister of Health and Social Services, said that “It’s inspiring to see the unique and impactful ways recipient organizations promote healthy living in their communities. Education on healthy eating, physical activity, sexual health, tobacco harm, and other healthy living topics empowers individuals to make healthier choices throughout their lives. We are proud to support initiatives that truly make a difference in the lives of NWT residents and families.”
Annual Healthy Choices funding is $418,000, with each project receiving a minimum of $10,000 and a maximum of $75,000 per fiscal year. The Healthy Choices Fund is available to Indigenous governments in the NWT, community governing authorities, and non-government organizations.
