The Board of Management recommends reappointment of Chair, Commissioner

The Board of Management has formally recommended the reappointment of Mr. Charles Dent as Chair and Ms. Marion Berls as Commission Member to the Human Rights Commission by way of motion through the Legislative Assembly.

Dent has served as the Chair of the NWT Human Rights Commission since July 1, 2012. His long-standing commitment to public service includes 16 years as the MLA for Frame Lake, including eight years as Minister overseeing several portfolios. Mr. Dent played an important role in the passage of the NWT Human Rights Act in 2002, contributing to its recognition as one of Canada’s most advanced pieces of legislation during that period.

Marion Berls, a Member of the Commission since July 1, 2012, has lived in the NWT for over 45 years. Her extensive community involvement, including roles as a town counsellor and deputy mayor in Fort Smith, showcases her commitment to public service and advocacy for human rights.

The Board of Management’s recommendations highlight the ongoing commitment of Mr. Dent and Ms. Berls to the advancement and protection of human rights in the Northwest Territories. The responsibilities of the Human Rights Commission encompass administering the Human Rights Act, fostering public awareness and education on human rights matters, initiating programs to eradicate discrimination, and encouraging understanding and adherence to the Human Rights Act across the NWT.
