Denny Rodgers, the MLA for Inuvik Boot Lake, addressed the GNWT budget on behalf of the Accountability Oversight Committee, describing the 2024–25 document as a “pump the brakes” budget.
Premier R.J. Simpson and cabinet cut the budget by $150 million within the next four years. The budget explored various strategies to achieve this goal. Rodgers is optimistic about reaching this target. Nonetheless, there are items that the regular members wish to be included in the budget, which they intend to discuss in today’s session.
The Accountability Oversight Committee intends to address the budget after extensive review and consideration. Its role is to compile recommendations for the cabinet’s examination, emphasizing the importance of the suggestions they bring forward. While ultimately, the cabinet has the discretion to act as they see fit, their presentation today will reflect a consensus that takes into account the government’s priorities.
The budget reflects the government’s priorities, and according to Rodgers, if its focus is on housing, healthcare, and addiction services, then these areas must receive the necessary attention. This means that if there is aging infrastructure and housing is a priority, it must be maintained, and adequate funding is required to do so. The government needs to preserve what they have and also construct new homes. If these are indeed the priorities, then those departments warrant a second look and concentrated efforts.
