New Exhibit Opens in Yellowknife’s Visitor Information Centre

A new exhibit is coming to Yellowknife’s Visitor Information Centre in the Centre Square Mall.

The new exhibit is called “Skies of Wonder,” and will be aiming to help support the NWT’s aurora tourism sector ahead of the Solar Maximum in 2025.

A Solar Maximum is the period of greatest solar activity during the Sun’s 11-year cycle. During the solar maximum, there are a larger number of both sunspots and solar irradiance than usual.

The Skies of Wonder exhibit will consist of a 3D theatre and information kiosks to teach visitors about the skies and aurora borealis, including when the lights will next be visible. The exhibit will also feature a collection of photos taken from around the North, in a gathering known as the “Wall of Wow.”

The Skies of Wonder exhibit was put together with financial assistance from the GNWT, the Department of Industry, Tourism, and Investment, as well as consultation with Astronomy North and the University of Calgary.

The exhibit was officially opened on April 16th at 10:15 am, and will be open to visitors daily between 10:00am to 6:00pm.
