Several Arrests Made in Yellowknife Firearms Incident

Yellowknife RCMP have arrested and charged a man with several firearm related offences after an incident over the weekend.

On November 25th, Yellowknife officers responded to a firearms complaint at Hilltop Apartment Complex. RCMP were contacted by a complainant who reported that a man was armed with a gun and had threatened and chased the complainant out of the residence.

The Yellowknife RCMP responded to the complaint and advised residents near the unit to shelter in place. A media release and social media post were also put out requesting that people avoid the are while police responded to the situation. The Northwest Territories RCMP Emergency Response Team was called to assist and took a number of people into custody. A search warrant was granted for the unit the following day and investigators recovered a long gun from the residence.

RCMP have charged 38-year-old Craig Strachan of Yellowknife with pointing a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm, and careless use of a firearm and failing to comply with the conditions of a release order. Charges of unsafe storage of a firearm are also pending against a 27-year-old man. The other people who were arrested have been released without charge.
