Several NWT women are among the recipients of the 2023 STEM Scholarships for Canadian Women from the De Beers Group.
There are ten recipients in total, and each one of them will now receive $4,500 to help support their studies in their respective fields that range from neuroscience, veterinary medicine and environmental engineering.
Among the ten recipients, four are from Yellowknife, and one is from Hay River.
The four Yellowknife winners include:
Sophie Mahon, who studied Cellular, Molecular and Developmental Biology at the University of Alberta;
Tamara Mathison, who studied Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba;
Giselle Penney, who studied Biomedical Sciences at the University of Calgary;
and Cassie Rogers, who studied Environmental Engineering at the University of Waterloo.
The recipient from Hay River is Josee Touesnard, who studied Science at Queens University.
Since De Beers launched the STEM scholarship program in Canada in 2018, 104 scholarships have been awarded to Canadian women. This has been made possible through collaboration with UN Women, and partnerships with institutions like the University of Waterloo, the University of Calgary, and Scholarships Canada.
