Fort Smith schools to resume operations on September 22nd, plans to compensate for lost time “in motion”

After the Town of Fort Smith was granted permission to begin their community re-entry process, the South Slave Divisional Education Council (SSDEC) has released some information regarding the start of the 2023/24 school year.

On September 12th, essential workers were prioritized to return, aiding the preparation of school facilities.

According to SSDEC, Friday, September 22nd will see a “soft start” reopening for Joseph Burr Tyrrell Elementary School (JBT) and Paul William Kaeser High School (PWK). Students and their families are invited to register, familiarize themselves with the campus, and meet staff.

After the weekend, on Monday, September 25th, full academic sessions are scheduled to begin.

SSDEC adds that plans are in motion to address and compensate for the nearly three week academic gap in the school year due to evacuations.
