“It’s a small gesture from us”: Edmonton Elks giving away tickets to NWT evacuees

Evacuees from around the Northwest Territories have flocked to cities and towns across Alberta to evacuate the ongoing wildfire crisis ravaging the territory.

According to reports, over 3,000 evacuees are currently in Edmonton alone, and over 60% of the territory has been displaced around western Canada.

As a result, the Edmonton Elks CFL football team has offered free tickets for all NWT evacuees looking to enjoy a “home-team” football game.

“It’s a small gesture from us to give away free tickets but it’s something that we felt was important for us to do and give evacuees an opportunity to keep their minds off of things for a couple of hours and enjoy a good football game,” Edmonton Elks Marketing and Communications Director Evan Daum tells MyTrueNorthNow.

“We know that people are concerned about getting back hopefully soon, but in the meantime we wanted to do something that hopefully will bring a little bit of joy to people,” Daum adds.

Evacuees interested in attending the game only need to show a valid piece of NWT identification or wristband to the Elks team store before 5:00pm on August 25th, or at a ticket booth at Commonwealth Stadium on gameday.
