As the SPCA continues to take care of the furry residents of Yellowknife, Vice President of the NWT SPCA Margo Thorne reports good news for the city’s pet owners and animal lovers alike.
After the city was hit with a nighttime downpour on August 20th, the SPCA reported no additional animals were found downtown but plans are in place to complete another sweep.
“The volunteers that came out looking for loose dogs didn’t mind the rain, but we’re going to try again because we know the dogs would’ve sheltered in place,” Thorne tells MyTrueNorthNow.
Additionally, supports from as far south as Oregon are in place for the shelter and according to Thorne, Vets Without Borders, Wings of Rescue, and Cheeky Chops have completed support operations bringing pet food to the north and evacuating pets to the south.
“Today, Vets Without Borders has been working with Wings of Rescue who are volunteer pilots that help out, they’re coming in from Oregon, and stopped in Edmonton for supplies that are coming up,” Thorne says.
“Cameron from Cheeky Chops is down there loading up supplies for the plane and they arrive in Yellowknife around 10:00 and we’ll be picking up some more shelter animals as well as pets with owners to reunite them… I think they’re doing pickups for Yellowknife/Hay River and reuniting them in Alberta and Vancouver.”
“It’s huge and very much appreciated for sure, we couldn’t do any of this without the logistical support of Vets Without Borders” she adds.
According to the NWT SPCA, over 41 shelter dogs and cats have been evacuated from the city through Buffalo Airways, and Thorne says the rest of the dogs are on their way out soon.
“We’re still working on getting the remaining shelter dogs out, they’re special needs and we are a no kill shelter so we’re very selective on where those animals go,” Thorne says.
“We were working with wings of rescue but their flight was Saturday but we wanted to get them out sooner so Buffalo stepped up in a major way and helped out,” she adds.
The NWT SPCA continues to accept monetary support and interested individuals are encouraged to visit canadahelps.org and search for ‘NWT SPCA’ to donate.
