Hot weather and unfavourable winds expected to hit Yellowknife August 19-21

Unfavourable conditions are headed to the Diamond Capital over the weekend, NWT Fire reports.

According to NWT Fire, hot temperatures in the 20’s and winds blowing activity to the east is expected on Sunday.

“While there remains a possibility that this fire reaches the outskirts of Yellowknife by the end of the weekend given wind conditions, the risk of this timeline has fallen with a little help from weather and some successful days of firefighting,” NWT Fire says.

Air crews say they have continued to fly missions throughout the day to slow the blaze and attempts have been successful.

NWT Fire says structure protection teams continue to work on Highway 3 structures to prevent as many losses as possible, moving closer to Yellowknife day-by-day.

Additionally, crews are establishing 10km of control line to the west of the capital, with crews cutting line and work from heavy equipment alongside fire retardant has been underway to provide crews with a base of operations.
