City of Edmonton opens evacuation centre for Yellowknife evacuees, 974 residents and 60 pets registered

The City of Edmonton opened an evacuation centre to support Yellowknife evacuees on August 18, 2023. 

The City of Edmonton has begun accepting Yellowknife evacuees at the Edmonton EXPO Centre. According to the Dene Nation total of 974 residents and 60 pets had been registered as of 4:00pm on August 18, and registrations are ongoing.

Supports for evacuees held up in Edmonton are available and include animal care services on-site with pet food and supplies from 8:00-8:00 every day and Fitness and Health services through the Edmonton recreation and leisure centres with full access to amenities and showers. 

Additionally, transit service and DATS are helping move evacuees between the airport, Leduc, Wetaskawin, and Edmonton. 

Anyone in Edmonton is encouraged to bring donations of any kind to the EXPO Centre.

Residents making donations for pets can drop them off at the Edmonton Humane Society at 13620 163 St NW between 9:00am and 7:00pm. 

Monetary donations are accepted through the United Way, Red Cross, and Goba Care.
