The City of Yellowknife, in partnership with the GNWT and the Department of National Defence, have announced several precautionary steps for Yellowknifers to take during the fire evacuation.
Residents are encouraged to unplug non-essential appliances like microwaves and televisions before leaving their homes, turning off power knobs on appliances, and securing your residence by locking doors and windows.
Additionally, Yellowknifers can assist fire crews through taking a few fire smarting steps before leaving.
Moving portable propane cylinders away from any homes or structures that may be impacted by the flames is strongly advised and residents are asked not to leave sprinklers on. Officials say sprinklers left on could strain the City’s water supply and negatively impact the water pressure needed to fight the wildfires.
